This staple permit pattern was originally designed by storied angler/tier Will Bauer in Belize.
Legend has it that Will used to sit in a lawn chair, shaded by a beach umbrella, on his favorite flat in Permit Alley waiting for the tide to get right and the permit to arrive. Once a fish was in range, Will would emerge from his sanctuary, put a 70-foot laser cast on his target, slowly strip his crab imitation, and elicit an eat more times than not. When the excitement was over, Bauer would slide back into his chair and wait for the next fish to bump up onto his flat.
The Bauer Flats Crab has a permanent position in our Permit boxes on every trip no matter the location.
